![]() John Brotchie is the eldest of six children in a family with centuries-old ties to the Sinclair clan of northern Scotland. The Brotchie children were raised in the U.S. by a stay-at-home mom and a WW II vet who worked in a factory for most of his adult life. Both parents were survivors of the Great Depression and they typified a post-war American optimism that was tempered by the sobriety of economic reality. That, combined with their strong Scot-Irish Catholic values, passed on to John and his siblings a lasting respect for not only the values of hard work, but also the shameless joy of finding a good bargain whenever possible! It can be said of his mother that she was the Queen of Filene’s Basement in the heyday of that Bostonian Bargain Hunters Paradise … that mosh pit of flying elbows and uninhibited, center-of-the-aisles disrobing in a frenzied try-it-on-for-size-before-you-buy delirium. Nobody outdid this woman in terms of fashionably clothing and feeding six kids with her tireless budget stretching! That’s probably what’s driven the author (at least partially) to pride himself on being a “professional penny-pincher.” And it certainly must have been a motivating factor behind his now being an internationally honored Writer, Editor, & Marketing Strategist with over 30 years of Marketing and Communications experience. He has written several books, edited many others, published a national magazine, published an almanac, and been a columnist for the Boston Globe. Much of his focus now involves producing “How-To” publications and products that help families and businesses save money, increase income, and secure future economic stability. As an award-winning Writer, Designer, and Creative Director, he brings a wealth of experience to both consumer issues and to the corporate communication efforts of firms he “partners” with. Mr. Brotchie is CEO of The StrategicSolution, a marketing communications firm that specializes in “small business repairs” for the little guys throughout the US, Europe, & South America. He is pragmatic, creative, streetwise, and sensitive. His easy-to-read writing style is not at all what one would expect from a former English Department Chairman at a private New England prep school for boys. But the real secret of his successes is simple and direct. John Brotchie holds a Master’s degree in Applied Psychology. He merges that science with every day business marketing and communication issues that affect sales, growth, and profitability for companies or organizations with whom he agrees to work. He has been the winner of an international “Echo” award (the “Oscar” for Direct Marketing), 3 international World’s Fair awards, and numerous national awards for his creativity and innovation. He created a newsletter series judged by the national Trial Lawyers Marketing Association as the “Best Legal Marketing Material of 1989.” He also won the Hammermill Paper Corporation’s coveted “Creative Inking” award bringing it back to New England for the first time in over seven years. As a seasoned traveler, he speaks 4 languages (“at least enough to get by with”) and is a frequent visitor to Mexico as well as Europe. Boston’s North Shore has been home for most of his life. “It’s an area so steeped in history, traditional values, natural beauty, and rugged Atlantic coastlines that it’s hard not to be creative,” claims the author. When he’s not writing or consulting, John continues to spend as much time as he can with his life-long passion for horses and equestrian sports.
